Colombia’s Constitutional Court has not finished studying the proposal to hold a referendum on allowing President Alvaro Uribe’s to run for a third term.
Court President Nilson Pinilla told radio station Caracol that the high court is still in the process of reviewing the proposal.
The advice to approve the bill given Tuesday by the country’s inspector general does not seem to have pushed the court to make their decision sooner.
“It is a very important judicial opinion, coming from the inspector general, but it will be analyzed with all the care it requires. The Court will decide to accept the concept or reject it. Usually [the inspector general’s advice] is an opinion like all others,” Pinilla said.
Supporters of the president are waiting for the court to rule on the referendum, with time to organize the popular vote quickly running out. With only four months until the presidential elections there is still no clarity on Uribe’s ability, or will, to run for office again.
