Colombian opposition senator Piedad Cordoba took another swing at Colombian President Alvaro Uribe, saying he is creating a dictatorship and has no democratic character.
“The situation in Colombia is critical because of the collapse of ethics and public morality, because of the increasing poverty and misery of the people and because of the consolidation of a civil dictatorship with clear authoritarian characteristics,” Cordoba said during a conference in the Venezuelan capital Caracas.
According to the leftist Bolivarian press agency, the senator of the Liberal Party said the Colombian State is being taken over by paramilitaries, because of the absence of justice and a consequent impunity.
The senator also fiercely opposed the call for a re-election of the popular Uribe. “I think it’s disgraceful how they are debating changing the constitution (…) to allow the re-election of a person who has been surrounded by paramilitaries and has no democratic character,” she said.
Cordoba is a close ally of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and one of Colombia’s most verbal opponents of the current government. The Uribe administration accuses her of having ties to the FARC.
