Colombian President Santos is likely to grant controversial ex-Senator Piedad Cordoba a key role in possible peace talks with leftist guerrilla groups, a high government official told Colombian radio.
In an interview with La FM, Bogota‘s hostage release mediator Eduardo Pizarro said that “in the future it is probably that Piedad Cordoba will fulfill other roles … The president proposed that if there are gestures by the guerrilla groups it is likely that she will be given the key to a peace process.”
The government official would not get into details about the exact role the former senator will play if government and rebels sit down for peace talks.
Cordoba is currently involved in operations leading up to the release of five hostages. She was barred from holding public office for 18 years by Colombia’s inspector general who considered it proven the leftist politician has ties to the FARC, the country’s largest rebel group.
