Former Senator Piedad Cordoba says she will begin on Thursday to organise details of the release of five hostages who the FARC has promised to free.
In an interview published on her website, the politician said she would work along with her campaign group Colombians for Peace and with the government to settle the logistics of the release. She also said she would not make any more public statements about the matter.
In an open letter to the former senator, published on FARC-friendly website Anncol last week, the rebels’ high command announced that they would free two local politicians, one police major, one soldier and one marine, on the condition that Cordoba could oversee their release.
Cordoba said she was glad that the government had agreed to let her take part in the operation “Simply, we’re going to put ourselves at the service of the work that has to be done.”
The unilateral offer by the rebels was “encouraging,” said Cordoba, as it opens possibilities not only for more releases but for the end of the country’s conflict.
