Copa Mustang: Junior, Chicó and América win

by Jonathan Roorda February 8, 2009
1.5K

Junior Barranquilla and Boyacá Chicó got off to a good start this
season, beating Millonarios and Atlético Huila respectively. América
had already defeated Cúcuta Deportivo on Friday.

Carmelo Valencia put Millonarios in the lead after 35 minutes in Barranquilla and almost got a second goal when his shot bounced off the crossbar, then off the keeper and back onto the bar.

Junior showed great improvement in the second half while Millonarios lost focus. ‘El Principe’ Giovanni Hernández netted the equalizer at 55 minutes and Luis Ruiz added a winner five minutes later.

Last year’s Copa Mustang I winners Boyacá Chicó began their year with a 0-1 win at Atlético Huila in the city of Neiva.

Huila were clearly the better side in the first half but the hosts were very unfortunate with two shots hitting the post.

The only goal of the match was scored by the away side, with Henry Palacios breaking the deadlock at 35 minutes.

Defending champions América de Cali had a bad start against Cúcuta Deportivo on Friday, as the away side opened the score through Lionard Pajoy after less than three minutes.

But Gustavo Victoria levelled another three minutes later and the match seemed to be heading for a draw. However, Wilmer Parra scored a goal in the very last minute of regular time to earn the Reds their three points of the season.
