Copa Mustang II Preview: Week 16

by Jonathan Roorda October 31, 2009
1.2K

The Colombian Copa Mustang II has reached its most crucial phase, as a large number of teams battle to conquer a spot in the top eight.

Independiente Medellin are certain of a spot in the group phase, and the match with Cucuta Deportivo will therefore be of little importance. Cucuta are practically out of contention themselves, and will have little more than their pride at stake in this game.

Deportivo Pasto visit Boyaca Chico, in a match that is particularly important to the latter. Chico are currently outside the top eight, but still have a small chance to advance. However, if this match isn’t won, the Tunja outfit aren’t very likely to make it anymore.

Atletico Huila and Atletico Junior are both in a good position and their meeting on Saturday isn’t likely to affect which teams make it to the next round.

Deportes Tolima visit La Equidad in Bogota and defend their fifth place. Although their are currently on course for a spot in the next round, the Ibague outfit realize that a defeat in this match could unnecessarily increase the pressure. Therefore, ‘los Pijaos’ are expected to give it their all at El Techo stadium.

Deportivo Pereira, currently sixth in the league, host Millonarios in what is truly a vital match. The winner of this game will have one step in the next round, but the losing side may even drop out of the top eight. Both have the same amount of points, but Pereira have a much better goal record.

Atletico Nacional are at the bottom of the top eight, and face Envigado in a regional derby. Envigado are in last position and won’t be quite as motivated as their opponents. Nacional should be able to win this match, unless Envigado feel inspired by the derby aspect.

Santa Fe are the first team at the wrong side of the red line, but know that any of their near rivals could mess up this weekend. The Bogota side themselves host reigning champions Once Caldas in an absolute must-win.

Deportivo Cali are three points away from the top eight and travel to face Real Cartagena at the coast. Anything less than a win, could mean the end to Cali’s championship ambitions. The same goes for Cartagena, who are just one point behind Cali.

In the remaining match, America de Cali host Deportes Quindio. Neither side is still in contention for a top eight classification.
