Independiente Medellin almost caused a shock in Brazil, but were
eventually held to a 1-1 draw by giants Sao Paulo. Nevertheless a very
positive result for the Colombians.
Bookmakers clearly favored Sao Paulo for this game and although the Brazilians created chances, it was Medellín to score the opener on 80 minutes. Striker Luis Carlos Arias received a pass from the end line and his following strike from the edge of the penalty area left the keeper stranded.
It looked like the Colombians were going to take three very valuable points from their clash in Brazil but the hosts scored a dramatic equaliser three mintues into added time, when Borges’ volley flew past Medellín keeper Bobadilla.
DIM and Sao Paulo now share second place in Group 4 of the Copa Libertadores. Defensor Sporting, Medellín’s opponents next week, beat América de Cali last week and occupy the top spot.
