Colombia’s Conservative Party on Thursday opposed a bill which would regulate the practice of euthanasia and assisted suicide in the country.
Like the splinter-party MIRA did on Wednesday, Conservatives voiced their disdain for the proposed law that currently awaits a second debate in the plenary of the Senate.
“Euthanasia is practically the disposal of life,” said Conservative Senator Efrain Cepeda Sarabia.
The Conservative senator believes the bill to be the beginning of a slippery slope where abuses “that should not be allowed in Colombia” could occur.
The bill was first approved for debate on October 9th by a vote of 10 to 4.
The President of Colombia’s Congress, Roy Barreras, said that “the project is good and necessary.”
Senator Armando Benedetti sought to add nuance to the debate by pointing out that the initiative “give[s] authority to the patient to request euthanasia where the conditions of life are not dignified, or that their families can decide if the person is not concious.”
