The president of the South American Football Confederation, Conmebol, will be taking on the Colombian nationality on Friday.Nicolás Leoz was born in Paraguay from a Spanish father and a Paraguayan mother, in 1928. Now, at the age of 80, the chairman wants to prove the interest he developed in Colombia.
The change of nationality doesn’t come as a complete surprise: Leoz married María Clemencia Pérez, from the department of Armenia, and together they have two sons.
“I have a special feeling for Colombia. I am ‘cuyabro’ (nickname for people from Armenia) because my wife is from there,” Leoz said.
The event comes just ahead of the match between Colombia and Paraguay, an important qualifier for the 2010 World Cup. Asked about the game, Leoz said that “he never gives predictions” and that he prefers to focus on becoming Colombian.
