Congressmen of the coalition De la U party insist that former president Alvaro Uribe should run for mayor of Bogota, despite the fact that the party members see this as a “remote possibility.”
Senator Roy Barreras, one of the party’s most prominent members and long-time Uribe supporter, told newspaper El Espectador that he will meet with Uribe and try to persuade the former president to run for what is considered the country’s second most important political post.
According to Barreras, “Bogota needs a President” to succeed the highly unpopular leftist mayor Samuel Moreno, whose term ends on December 31 this year.
The Partido de la U candidate will have to run against popular candidates such as former mayor Enrique Peñalosa, former Representative David Luna, and Bogota council member Carlos Galan. Barreras considers Uribe the best for this job.
“The other parties are proposing viable candidates and in my opinion La U must regain power in the capital and the only name that guarantees victory is that of Alvaro Uribe,” he told newspaper El Espectador.
