A Colombian congressman found himself in the middle of a controversy Monday when his ex-wife on national radio claimed to have lost her unborn baby due to his alleged beatings.

According to the ex-wife of House Representative Jose Rodolfo Perez, the assault found place in an apartment in the north of Bogota the 15th of March. In an interview with radio station La FM, ex-wife Zully Mejia revealed how she was threatened into remain silent in order not to face “consequences”.

“He hit me hard. He kicked me, he punched me and he slapped me. I told him that I was going to report the assault against me. When I said I was going to report it he threatened me saying ‘go ahead and there will be consequences’,” she told the radio station.

Mejia further revealed that this was not the only time her ex-husband had physically abused her. She said that a previous attack caused her 10% of her hearing.

Perez is the brother of Miguel Angel Perez, who was sentenced six years prison for links to the AUC -paramilitary leader “Martin Llanos.”
