Colombia’s dismissed prosecutor general Viviane Morales has officially resigned and said she will not be available for reelection.
In a 15-minute speech to her staff and fellow employees, Morales announced that she would not be available for the candidate shortlist President Santos must submit to the Supreme Court.
The dismissed official stated that by not allowing her to work on current and upcoming investigations and by having a temporary replacement, the entire institution will be weakened.
Hoyos addressed the various media attacks made against her and her husband, ex-congressman and former M-19 guerrilla Carlos Alonso Lucio, saying that they were low, vile, and slanderous.
She concluded by saying that it had been a difficult year as the Prosecutor General but that she has never faltered in the prosecution of major cases like the Agricultural Income Insurance scandal.
Colombia’s State Council voted to remove Hoyos from her role as the Prosecutor General earlier this week on the basis that she was not elected into office properly.
