Colombia’s president Juan Manuel Santos offered his congratulations to Barack Obama, hours after the U.S. leader beat Republican challenger Mitt Romney in a gruelling election race.
“Congratulations President Obama, we hope to continue working in the same way as we have been for the past two years: coordinated, with the same purpose, with the same goals, and with the same results,” said Santos, who took office in 2010.
“So this triumph of President Barack Obama is good news for us because it allows us to continue consolidating a relationship that already has a strong foundation,” added Santos.
During Santos’ two years in office, Colombia and the United States secured a high-profile free trade agreement, which was ratified earlier this year. “The Free Trade Agreement was finally approved… The relationship with the U.S. has reached such a level that today Colombia has with the United States a special moment,” claimed Santos.
The Colombian head of state also made reference to the strong military ties between the two countries. Since 1996, the U.S. has invested more than $7 billion in military and police grants to Colombia.
