Colombia’s Pacific coast was not affected by the tsunami that followed an 8.8 earthquake in Chile on Saturday. Authorities say they are prepared for a slight rise in the water level.
According to the national disaster institute, the water may rise 15 to 20 centimeters following the massive earthquake that killed at least 122 persons in Chile.
Because the possible mini-tsunami is expected to take place during low tide, “towns located in Colombia’s Pacific zone will not be affected.” the disaster institute said.
Colombia, like all other countries bordering the Pacific Ocean were warned by U.S. authorities about the tsunami that followed the earthquake.
