The workers union for the Cerrejon coal mine in northern Colombia on Tuesday said that all work could be halted next week if a deal is not reached with employers about work conditions and wages.
Sintracarbon, the union representing the Cerrejon workers, said 93% of union members voted in favor of a strike. According to newspaper El Colombiano, the workers’ demands include higher wages, and better access to health and education services.
Cerrejon, located in the northern department of La Guajira, is Colombia’s most productive coal mine with some 12,000 employees.
Due to the economical importance if the mine, its transport routes are often targeted by attacks from left-wing rebels.
