Colombia’s Foreign Minister, San Andres political leaders and a troupe of lawyers on Monday met with the UN Secretary General to protest the recent International Court of Justice [ICJ] ruling, reported local media.
According to Holguin, the Secretary General “took careful note of the social and economic impacts” of the [ICJ] decision, and she is optimistic that Secretary General Ban Ki Moon will review the case.
The Colombian foreign minister said that at the very least, the safety and security of the islanders would be examined by UNESCO.
It is questionable, however, whether Colombia’s continued protest against the ruling will result in any changes to the situation. As one analyst has commented, the meeting on Monday was “more of a symbolic gesture to add further weight to the denunciation of the Pact of Bogota,” and that “there is no possibility that the ruling will be amended.”
Nevertheless, the foreign minister has stated that Colombia will marshall all possible legal arguments available and present them to the ICJ in 2013.
