20 Colombian tourists are among the approximately 2,000 people trapped at Peru’s famed Machu Picchu ruins due to heavy rains and mudslides.
Colombia has offered to send helicopters to help Peru to evacuate tourists from the mountain. Severe flooding has blocked the roads and railroad lines leading to the Machu Picchu site.
Some tourists are reportedly paying up to $500 to be evacuated quickly. Several tourists and locals have been killed due to landslides in the valley leading towards Cuzco, the nearest city. Thousands of homes are believed to have been washed away.
600 Argentinians, 400 Americans, 200 Chileans, 200 Brazilians and 170 Australians are among those reportedly stranded at the ancient Incan city.
