Three Colombian soldiers were injured in Egypt Friday when gunmen attacked an international peacekeeping base in anger over a film produced in the United States denigrating the prophet Muhammad.
The Colombians were injured when attackers stormed one side of the Multinational Force and Observers building in the Gora region in Egypt’s Sinai peninsula.
A spokesman from the United Nations told Spanish news agency EFE Saturday that the Colombians suffered minor injuries and are well.
According to the Eyptian government, calm returned to the peninsula after Egyptian armed forces moved in and removed the protesters.
The U.N. peace keeping force in Sinai consists of 300 Colombians, 80 Americans and 35 Uruguayans.
Protests broke out this week after an online trailer for the film “Innocence of Muslims,” dubbed in Arabic, was aired on an Egyptian religious TV channel. Outrage over the video, which depicts Muhammad as violent and perverse, triggered attacks against U.S. diplomatic missions in several cities in the Mideast and North Africa this week.
A Tuesday attack by militants on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, killed four Americans, including the U.S. Ambassador.
