Colombians dominate Latin Grammy nominations

Fifteen Colombian music acts have been nominated for this year’s 10th Latin Grammys, to be held in Las Vegas on November 5.

Singer Andres Cepeda was the most nominated Colombian, with his album Día Tras Día nominated for Album of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Male Pop Album.

“I got the news as a surprise,” said Cepeda, reported Colombian music site Vive In. “I am delighted. It means that my work is being valued and spread [around]. With Día Tras Día the right decisions were made from the beginning, starting with the selection of songs and tdeciding to work again with Freddy Camelo (former musician and producer of the album Polysics). We did everything very carefully, which gave us the opportunity to realize that we took the right path.”

The range of music offered by Colombian acts this year is varied. Mauricio & Palodeagua are in the running for Best Tropical Song with their track Esa muchachita; Juan Carlos Coronel and Sin Ánimo de Lucro with their respective albums Superstición and Todo Pasa Por Algo are nominated for Best Contemporary Tropical Album. Totó La Momposina is nominated for Best Traditional Tropical Album with its offering La Bodega, and Ximena Ángel is nominated for Best Female Pop Album.

Chocquibtown is nominated for Best New Artist, and the collaborative album Pombo Musical, produced by Carlos Vives, is nominated for Best Children’s Album. Pipe Bueno, with their northern air music, is nominated for Best Group Album, and Walter Silva, joropo maestro, is nominated for Best Folk Album.

Furthermore, Jorge Villamizar has two nominations: Best Contemporary Tropical Song and Song of the Year for his collaborative effort with Jorge Luis Piloto, Yo No Sé Mañana, recorded by Luis Enrique.

This year, in the cumbia/vallenato category, Silvestre Dangond and Juan Mario de la Espriella are nominated for El Original; Diomedez Díaz is nominated for Celebremos Juntos; The band Kvass gets a nod for their songs Ombe and Cómo No; Peter Manjarrés and Sergio Luis Rodríguez are recognized for El Caballero del Vallenato; and  Iván Villazón and Iván Zuleta are nominated for El Vallenato Mayor.
