A Colombian cyclist won the men’s Juniors Track World Championships finishing seven points ahead of competitors.
Fernando Gaviria became a world champion in the International Cycling Union (UCI) Omnium championship in New Zealand on Friday.
Gaviria,18, from Colombia’s Antioquia department, won the gold medal after finishing six rounds with a total of 15 points, finishing well ahead of Briton Jon Dibben and Australian Tirian McManus.
The Colombian was leader in several of the events throughout the Omnium, despite suffering two crashes on the first night, and even broke a national record by completing 3km in just 3 minutes, 22 seconds, and 551 milliseconds, beating the previous record of 3:26:333.
The Omnium is a complex cycling competition where athletes compete in various events, gaining points in accordance with their finish times. The first place winner gets one point, second place winner gets two points, and so on. At the end of all of the rounds the cyclist with the least amount of points is the winner.
Colombia has won two medals for their country in the Juniors Track World Championships, Gaviria with the gold and Jordan Parra with a silver medal in Thursday’s scratch race.
