Mikey died of kidney failure in a hospital in Cali, where she was performing her latest work, Colombia’s National Theater said in a statement.
“Fanny will always be the queen of Colombia’s theater,” it said.
After studying acting in her native city of Buenos Aires, Mikey moved to Colombian in 1959. Two decades later, she helped found the National Theater Foundation, which now has three venues in the Colombian capital of Bogota and which she directed until her death.
In 1988, Mikey was a principal organizer of the first Iberoamerican Theater Festival. The biennial festival has become among the world’s most distinguished, featuring a total of 520 companies from 50 countries over the years.
Mikey is survived by her son Daniel Alvarez, current director of one of the National Theater houses, and a grandson, Nicolas Alvarez.
