Colombian students are more likely to have smoked marijuana, taken synthetic drugs, used cocaine or drunk alcohol than students in Bolivia, Ecuador or Peru, reports El Tiempo.

Around 27% of Colombian students have smoked marijuana at some time in their lives compared to 11.5% in Ecuador, 9% in Peru and a mere 7.6% in Bolivia.

In Colombia, 4.6% of students have used synthetic drugs. The figure is 1.6% in Peru, Ecuador and Bolivia.

The poll says that 6.4% of Colombian students have used cocaine, compared to 1.4% in Bolivia and 2.3% in Peru and Ecuador. 0.2% of Bolivian students have used cocaine in the last year, 0.5% in Peru, 0.6% in Ecuador and 2.5% in Colombia.

Over 90% of students in Colombia and Peru have drunk alcohol, compared to approximately 75% in Bolivia and Ecuador. It is estimated that in the last month, 68% of Bolivian students have not drunk alcohol, a figure that drops to 62% in Ecuador, 54% in Peru and 40% in Colombia.

Cannabis use in the UK and U.S. far outstrips that in Colombia, with roughly half of all 16 – 29 year olds in the UK, and around 42% of over-18s in the U.S. having used the drug at least once.
