The Colombian Soccer Federation (FCF) announces a “Prosperity Plan” to improve Colombian soccer in time for its hosting of the FIFA Under-20 World Cup, RCN Radio reports Tuesday.
Luis Bedoya, president of the FCF, said in a meeting with President Santos that the new initiative aims to improve the rules and regulations of Colombia’s national sport.
The plan will prioritize the reduction of violence in football stadiums, which has come under increased media spotlight following recent riots in Bogota and news of stadium bans for certain fan groups.
The plan, which is to be implemented from March, will also address the issue of soccer clubs’ finances, particularly regarding the accumulation of debts.
The FCF president further noted that the government is seeking to adjust the penal code to include penalties for people who carry or throw dangerous objects at players, officials, or other fans.
Colombia is preparing to welcome under-20 teams from nations around the world this summer for the younger edition of the FIFA World Cup.
