Players from Colombia’s Junior de Barranquilla soccer team are blocked in a Bolivian airport the same day as their Copa Libertadores clash.
Protests over Bolivia’s education system blocked the main streets of the city including the roads out of the airport and highways connecting El Alto to La Paz, where Junior are scheduled to play Club Bolivar.
According to a Bolivian police source, the team was blocked in the airport for some time, before they were able to leave at 11AM local time. They arrived at their hotel in downtown La Paz one and a half hours later.
Fans hoped that the protest would not affect preparations for the important game four of the Copa Libertadores. Junior, currently bottom of group three, need a win to revive their floundering Libertadores campaign.
Three points would put them level on points with second-placed Bolivar, whereas a loss would likely mean their exit from the competition.
