Colombia’s national police chief General Oscar Naranjo meets with Supreme Court judges to discuss recent threats made against magistrates.
Court President Jaime Arrubla called the meeting as a result of threats, allegedly made by a prison inmate in Santander, to attack Augusto Ibañez, a judge in the Supreme Court’s criminal division.
Arrubla said that President Juan Manuel Santos had contacted him to express solidarity and a commitment to initiate a dialogue with relevant security agencies to ensure the safety of all members of the high courts.
Other magistrates that have been victims of recent threats include Sigifredo Espinoza, who approached General Naranjo after being harassed while traveling to Medellin, and Yesid Ramirez, who received death threats, causing the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights to call on the Colombian government to protect him.
