Colombian police thwart assassination attempt on president

Police technicians defused a series of explosives found Tuesday in a soccer field that was being refurbished as a helicopter landing pad for President Juan Manuel Santos’ visit to southwestern Colombia, local media reported Wednesday.

Santos is scheduled to hold a Council of Ministries meeting Wednesday at 9AM in Toribidio, a small city in the Cauca department. Colombia’s largest armed group, the FARC, has launched a series of attacks on Cauca in the past week.

Also on Tuesday, a motorcycle bomb targeting security forces exploded on the outskirts of El Plateado, Cauca, injuring as many as five people, according to conflicting media reports, and killing one child.
