The Colombian navy said Monday it has found a semi-submergible submarine used to transport cocaine in a remote riverbed in the southwest of the country.
The 20 meter long, diesel-driven vehicle had the capacity to transport four people and up to eight tons of cocaine, a press statement said.
The vehicle had strong enough engines to travel all the way to Central America’s Pacific coast, according to El Espectador.
The navy said it belonged to drug-trafficking organization “Los Rastrojos,” which is mostly active along Colombia’s Pacific coast.
This is the second semi-submergible to be seized by Colombian authorities this year; In May, Colombian authorities found a similar ship near the Colombian port city of Buenaventura.
Semi-submersibles are popular with drug traffickers as the vehicles are considered almost impossible to detect on radar.
