Cundinamarca department failed to adequately prepare for Colombia’s devastating winter rains, said a regional judge Friday.
Judge Nelly Villamizar, part of a Cundinamarca tribunal which is investigating the regional government’s rainy season preparation, said it had not done its job properly.
One of the most worst examples of failure occured during the construction of a levee near the University of Sabana. It was supposed to control flooding but according to Villamizar, construction delays and errors “have now caused havoc.”
The tribunal is seeking to establish if the regional government environment agency CAR had addressed concerns raised in April about prevention strategies for the rainy season.
The General Directorate of the Cundinamarca CAR said all information and documentation pertaining to actions taken by the agency would be made available to the authorities.
