Colombia recorded an inflation rate of 0.32 per cent in April,
the National Statistics Department announced Monday. One year ago
the inflation rate was 0.71 per cent.
In the first four months of 2009 prices inflated by 2.26 per cent which is 1.89 points less compared to the same period in 2008 (4.15 per cent). However, the Consumer Price Index amounted to 5.73 per cent in the last 12 months.
The Colombian cities with the biggest variation in numbers were Pasto with 0.62 per cent, followed by San Andres with 0.61 per cent and Popayan with 0.58 per cent. The lowest inflation rate reported was that of Armenia with 0.10 per cent.
Finance Minister Zuluaga hopes that the low inflation rate will help to decrease the interest rate further, Radio Caracol reported Tuesday. This would help to raise the available income of households, especially of the poorest who were affected the most by the high increase of food prices last year.
