Colombia’s Inspector General, Alejandro Ordoñez will open a formal investigation against the country’s National Registrar Carlos Ariel Sanchez, as result of the irregularities in Sunday’s congressional election, reported CM&.

The investigation will look into the responsibility of the registrar for several problems and complaints that arose last Sunday, including delays in vote counting, technical errors, security breaches and rumors that staff at the Registry Office broke the enforced drinking ban by consuming alcohol on the day of the election.

According to reports, Ordoñez will focus investigations on the allegation that the National Registry office received two warnings, issued by the Committee for the Control of Electoral Affairs, stating that technical shortcomings had arisen during mock trials of the electoral process and that the same irregularities occurred during Sunday’s election procedure.

The Inspector General’s office will also be investigating reports of a security breach on the day of the elections, taking the form of a supposed cyber attack, designed to overload the Registry’s systems.

The software used by officials for the vote counting process has also been said to have failed in the generation of archives and the transmission of data.

Finally, Ordoñez announced that he would be investigating Sanchez for claims that the official broke the drinking ban that was enforced during the election weekend.

During investigation Carlos Ariel Sanchez will not be suspended to allow the development of the disciplinary investigation.

The Inspector General said that these shortcomings would be thoroughly investigated to ensure there prevention in May presidential election.
