The Colombian government announced on Thursday that it will compensate the families of each of the 48 victims killed in the tragic Manizales landslide.
According to the Manizales Mayor’s Office, the government promised to pay the funeral expenses and additionally give the families little under $6,000 for compansation.
It is estimated that after supplying aid for funerals, permanent disabilities, and compensation to the families, the initial payments to victims will reach $520,000.
The directors of municipal emergencies committee indicated that the compensation processes were assessed taking into account the considerations of the law that allow the payment for what is called a “catastrophic event.”
Each family member must attach the required documentation and present it to the office of special attention in the Caldas hospital where they are attending to the emergency.
According to the municipal administration, the compensations will be restricted to members of the immediate family and first-degree relatives. If the unclear family has been lost, then the nearest relative in direct line of the deceased will receive the compensation and/or care of any minors who may have lost their parents.
Given the lack of resources in the city, the decision was made to suspend rescue efforts after a five-day search.
