The Interior Ministry does not have enough money to implement its protection program for more than 10,000 at-risk people, the vice minister announced.
According to Colombian media, Vice Minister of the Interior Aurelio Iragorri told to the Economic Commission of Congress that the ministry would have a $31.8 million deficit in 2012 if it followed through with its plan.
Iragorri explained that the ministry was allocated $158.1 million in the draft budget, but that they only received $93.3 million.
The vice minster also admitted that the total deficit for 2012 is more than $65.9 million, which includes staff costs and overhead.
Interior Minister German Vargas Lleras recently spoke to the European Union high ranking officials and pointed to the success of the Interior Ministry’s security program to reassure them that Colombia is following through with its promise to improve its security and human rights problems.
