The Colombian government hopes to reduce the poverty level by 2% in 2012, reported local media Friday.
In the year 2011, there were allegedly over 15 million people living in poverty in Colombia. Approximately 5 million of those were living in extreme poverty, with an income of less than $100 per month.
Planning director Mauricio Santamaria hopes to reduce this number by at least 2% by the end of the year, bringing down the population’s poverty from 34% to 32%, and the extreme poverty level from 12% to 10%.
The government plans on investing over $4 million in different social programs throughout the country to reach this goal.
