A semi-submersible boat capable of carrying seven tons of cocaine is seized by the Colombian navy in the southern department of Tumaco near the border with Ecuador, El Espectador reported Wednesday.
According to Navy Admiral Hernando Wills, the vessel, approximately 59 feet in length and 10 feet in width, likely cost close to $800,000 to build.
At the site where the semi-submersible was found, the navy also discovered an area with the capacity to accommodate 25 people, 4,600 gallons and 330 lbs of production material for cocaine, two outboard motors, 147 firearms, and components used in the construction of semi-submersibles.
In an extension of the same operation, marines also found another site in Tumaco with a production capacity of one and a half tons of cocaine monthly.
Navy personnel said that the illegal site contained six wooden huts, two industrial power generators, and food, among materials used to produce cocaine. The navy claim that the site belongs to a narco-trafficking column of the FARC.
Wednesday’s findings mark the second significant discovery in the space of a month, following the seizure of a narco-submarine in February.
