A Colombian drug trafficker considered one of the leading members of the mafia in the capital Bogota has been captured in Ecuador.
Ecuadorean police said alias “Mosquito” was one of the leading members of the “La Cordillera” drug trafficking ring operating in Bogota and Quito, the capital of Ecuador.
At his arrest at a police checkpoint, Mosquito carried some 24 kilograms of drugs and $225,000.
The suspected drug trafficker was sentenced to 40 years in prison by a Colombian court in 2011 for homicide.
According to Colombian authorities, “La Cordillera” is one of the main drug trafficking gangs in Bogota’s “Bronx” district.
“The gang controlled the sector, [causing] fear and dread, mediating the homicides of persons, which could have permitted them to gain territories for the [sale] of drugs.”
The gang made some $40,000 a day from drug trafficking in Bogota and $20,000 a day from the operations in Quito, the Ecuadorean ministry of interior said.
