A conservative Colombian congressman introduced a bill Thursday that would grant gay Colombians civil unions, but rules out adoption rights, Caracol Radio reported.
Miguel Gomez Martinez, a conservative who joined the Partido de la U., introduced his bill in response to the Supreme’s Court’s ruling that Congress must address gay unions within two years. Gomez said that his bill did not create a marriage between gay couples, but a civil union which requires the consent of only one partner to dissolve.
The union would grant some rights regarding property and access to health care and pension plans. Gomez argued that his bill would not grant homosexual partners adoption rights as “the Constitution that a family is a bond between a man and a woman through marriage…so this (bill) cannot affect that figure.”
In addition to instructing Congress to address the partnership issue, the Supreme Court also found that homosexual unions constituted families in its ruling Wednesday.
