A Colombian businesswoman is sentenced to nine years in prison for ties to paramilitary organizations, El Tiempo reported Tuesday.
Enilse Lopez, alias “La Gata” (“The Cat”), an entrepreneur who made her fortune in the Colombian lottery, was convicted of conspiracy for her links to paramilitary groups between 2000 and 2003, but acquitted of allegations that she was connected to the murder of Amaury Fabian Ochoa Torres.
Lopez learned of the ruling from a hospital in Barranquilla, where she has been since last year due to various illnesses.
Her lawyer informed RCN Radio that he will appeal the ruling, and that her sentence should be carried out as house arrest, instead of a prison sentence, due to her frail health.
