Colombian authorities order further investigation into ex-DAS director

Colombia News - Maria Del Pilar Hurtado

Authorities have ordered further investigation of Colombia’s ex-DAS director, for allegedly providing illegally obtained information to use against Piedad Cordoba, local media reported Friday.

The Supreme Court has ordered the Prosecutor General’s Office to further investigate the actions of ex-DAS director Maria del Pilar Hurtado, who is now being accused of providing the information that ex-Senator Nancy Patricia Gutierrez used in the case against former senator Cordoba, accused of having ties to the FARC.

The court requested the investigation after reviewing the Gutierrez case, in the belief that Del Pilar Hurtado was responsible for ordering the deputy DAS director to hand the classified information to Gutierrez.

Former Senate President Gutierrez was placed under house arrest on Wednesday for allegedly using information illegally collected by DAS to advance accusations in Congress against Cordoba, who was subsequently dismissed from the Senate and banned from holding office for 18 years by Inspector General Alejandro Ordoñez.

Del Pilar Hurtado, who is being sheltered under political asylum by the Panamanian government, currently has an extradition request being processed against her for other aspects of involvement in the state intelligence agency’s major wiretapping scandal, which occurred during the administration of ex-President Alvaro Uribe.
