Colombia won seven gold medals on Wednesday at the Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico bringing the total up to 18.

The Colombian athletes won two golds in sprinting, two in skating, two in weightlifting, and one in gymnastics.

Yenifer Padilla was Colombia’s victor in the 400-meter dash, clocking-in at 51.53, while Maria Princesa Oliveros won the same honor in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 56.26.

In skating, Yercy Puello championed with a time of 26.444 seconds in the 300-meter timed trial, while her male counterpart Pedro Causil recorded 24.802 seconds in the same event.

Weightlifter Mercedes Perez set a new record at the Games lifting 287 pounds in the clean-and-jerk, and Ubaldina Valoyes lifted a total of 551 pounds over three events in the one-arm curl, the snatch, and the clean-and-jerk tying the record of the Games.

Josimar Orlando Calvo was Colombia’s gold winner in gymnastics with a combined score of 86.2 over five events: parallel bars, horizontal bars, rings, floor, and vault.

Colombia’s combined 18 gold medals this year surpasses the 14 won at the last Pan American Games in 2007 in Brazil. The seven golds won yesterday earned Colombia sixth place in the Games, overtaking Argentina with 17 medals.
