Colombia’s president Juan Manuel Santos said on Thursday that he wants to strengthen economic ties with the Dominican Republic
Santos attended the inauguration of new Dominican Republic President Danilo Medina.
The president of Colombia expressed his interest in further strengthening economic ties with the Caribbean nation.
“We are very interested in opening the Dominican market for Colombian products. We have made some progress but now we want more. We are also interested in selling energy which the Dominicans have expressed specific interest in buying,” said the Colombian president.
Colombian entrepeneurs have made notable investments in infrastructure in the Dominican Republic, added Santos. “We hope that this type of business will continue as it is good for Colombia as well as for the Dominican Republic.”
President Santos also recalled that Colombia was the first country Medina had visited as president elect when he had expressed his interest in maintaining and strengthening the “excellent relations” between the two countries.
Data from the National Administrative Department of Statistics however, shows the reduction in export value to the Dominican Republic was nearly 64 per cent less in June 2012 than in June 2011.
