Colombia’s Vice President, Angelino Garzon, on Monday lost in semi-final election for the presidency of the International Labour Organisation.
Garzon entered the fourth round of voting on Monday to become the leader of the United Nations’ labor organization but lost to the current ILO Deputy General Guy Rider of the U.K. who received 25 votes and Frenchman Gilles de Robien who followed closely with 24 votes.
The winner of the two will be elected for a term of five years and will replace Chilean Juan Somavia who has served as leader of the agency for the last 13 years.
Garzon has long been involved in Colombia’s labor sector and has previously served as the Minister of Labor and Social Security, governor of the department of Cauca and Colombian ambassador to the UN.
The final election will take place by secret ballot later Monday.
