Colombia torture victims to be remembered in Bogota event

In recognition of the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, a Colombian humanitarian organization will stage in event in Bogota, commemorating those affected by torture.

The Colombian Coalition against Torture (CCCT) will stage an event in Bogota recognizing the victims of torture, also asking the government to ratify an agreement by the Organization of American States (OAS) prohibiting the use of torture.

Colombia’s official registry of victims of the Colombian armed conflict stated that there are 8,210 victims of torture in Colombia, of the total 6.5 million victims included in the registry. 42,000 of these victims have entered government-funded programs aimed at psychological health, according to the Colombian government’s body dedicated to victim attention and reparation.

“The arrival of different international organizations and the work of the CCCT has demonstrated that torture is committed, and is hidden in a systematic manner in the country,” stated the communique referenced by news wire EFE.

The Bogota event will take place in the Parque de los Periodistas in downtown Bogota on Thursday afternoon from 1 PM to 4 PM.
