Colombia’s inspector general proposed reversing a court order that granted permanent custody of two adopted children to their gay foreign father.
According to reports Inspector General Alejandro Ordonez Maldonado proposed reversing last Wednesday’s Constitutional Court decision which gave Chandler Burr custody of two adopted children from the Andean nation.
Burr is a gay journalist from the U.S. working in Colombia, who was separated from his two children in March 2011 by Colombia’s Family Welfare Institute (ICBF).
According to the court’s statement, the ICBF had “taken for granted that the petitioner’s sexual orientation would have affected the outcome of the adoption process or generated a threat to the rights of children, ‘without ever explaining’ the reasons on which they based their conclusions.”
In wanting to reverse the decision, Ordonez cited the rights of the children and said he did not want to open a debate on the rights of gay people to adopt.
