Colombia news - Roy Barreras

Colombia’s senate president on Wednesday announced a series of meetings to be held in New York, London and other world cities to explain the peace process between the government and rebel group FARC.

Senate President, Roy Barreras, reportedly said that it is necessary for the world to understand the details of the peace process between the Colombian government and the FARC, and hopes that these meetings will provide a platform for this understanding.

In addition, the intention is also to discuss and explain the Victims and Land Restitution law, which is intended to provide reparations and assistance to victims of Colombia’s internal conflict.

There will also be nine more regional meetings, starting April 18 in Quibdo and ending in Villavicencio in June. Emphasis will be placed on listening to accounts from victims of the conflict at these meetings, Barreras said.

According to Caracol Radio, the Congressman’s proposition does not have the formal backing of the peace process negotiators in Havana.

The announcement comes after the UN Human Rights High Comissioner Navi Pillay called on the Colombian government not to resort to the granting of amnesties in the peace process.
