Colombia said Wednesday it is planning to “soon” ask Venezuela to extradite drug lord “El Loco Barrera” who was arrested by Venezuelan police on Tuesday.

During an intervention before Colombian Congress, Justice Minister Ruth Stella Correa confirmed Colombia’s interest to bring Daniel “El Loco” Barrera to justice in his home country.

“The Ministry of Justice will inform the judge who is in charge of the trials against him so that the judge can formalize the extradition request,” said Correa.

The Colombian drug traficker, considered “the last of the great capos” by President Juan Manuel Santos, was arrested in a town little more than 10 miles from the Colombian border while making a phone call.

Whether Venezuela extradites El Loco Barrera to Colombia depends on the Venezuelan government, said Correa.

Nevertheless, the justice minister said she was confident Caracas will extradite the drug lord and that El Loco Barrera will be behind Colombian bars within a month.

The Colombian drug lord, who has been involved in drug trafficking since the 1980s, also faces charges in the United States.
