The Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism on Monday announced the launch of a new business plan to promote Colombia’s burgeoning nature tourism industry.
The Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism announced the plan, in partnership with the private sector, to aid in the development of Colombia’s nature tourism industry, which encompasses ecotourism, adventure tourism, and rural tourism.
“The business plan seeks to position Colombia as an iconic destination for nature tourism, generating socio-economic and environmental benefits…[it] seeks to change the country into a destination offering something different, competitive and sustainable,” said Minister Sergio Diaz-Granados.
According to studies undertaken while developing the new business plan, it was estimated that in 2012, 260,000 tourists to Colombia, or 25-30% of the total number of visitors, were nature tourists. Furthermore, the average nature tourist spent $2,000 over a 15 day stay in the country.
Tourism Minister Sergio Diaz-Granados believes that the a public-private partnership could be a force in addressing national policy issues relating to conservation and ecotourism, and strengthening the network of national parks and protected nature reserves.
