Colombia’s Senate asks Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa to speak out on the legal proceedings against Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos for the 2008 cross-border attack that killed FARC commander “Raul Reyes.”
The Senate’s Foreign Affairs Committee said that a clear statement from Correa on the criminal investigation is desirable now that the two countries have improved relations and are working together to fight terrorism and drug trafficking.
Senator Chavarro told Caracol Radio that he hopes the Ecuadorean government will take the opportunity to clarify its position on Thursday when the foreign ministers of Colombia and Ecuador meet. According to the lawmaker, the pending trial hurts the dignity of the Colombian people, as represented by their president.
An Ecuadorean judge ordered an investigation into Santos for his role in the March 2008 cross-border attack on a FARC camp that killed Raul Reyes and 25 others. The Ecuadorean government has already said that Santos is free to travel to Ecuador without risking arrest because of his diplomatic immunity as president.
