Colombia’s foreign minister confirms the government’s plans to seek legal advice from Spanish judge Baltasar Garzon, Caracol Radio reported Tuesday.
“We want to strengthen the response we give to international organizations and we believe the judge is a person with great knowledge of these issues,” said Holguin.
The Spanish judge, who most recently worked as consultant to the International Criminal Court (ICC) after being suspended from the Spanish High Court, publicly stated in August that Colombia could face intervention from the ICC if it fails to provide justice to victims of the internal conflict.
Colombia’s inability to bring cases to court was the object of the Spaniard’s criticism. “There is a lack of the political and judicial coordination and resolve necessary to begin trials,” he said. Victims had suffered too much without seeing results, he added.
