Colombia Sunday rejected the coup in Honduras and asked the military
of the Central American country to reinstall ousted President
Manuel Zelaya Rosales.
In a press statement released by the Foreign Ministry, the government says it received the news with “deep consternation.”
Bogotá also asked the military to re-establish constitutional and legal order and says it supports the Organization of American States in its quest for a democratic solution to the situation.
Colombian President Alvaro Uribe, currently on an official visit to U.S. president Barack Obama, is expected to discuss the coup with the U.S. Head of State.
Obama already expressed that he felt “deeply concerned” about the Honduras coup. According to U.S. Secretary of State Hilary Clinton, the arrest and expelling of President Zelaya should be condemned by the international community.
The leftist Zelaya was ousted by his country’s military Sunday on the same day the President had scheduled a referendum on his proposed constitutional changes.
