Colombia’s Interior and Justice Minister Fabio Valencia Cossio received
US$33.7 million from the United Nations’ International Humanitarian
Organization to help the more than million victims of floods and
landslides that hit the country.
The two rainy seasons this year have caused dramatic emergencies in almost all the country. So far 151 people died, 220 were seriously injured, nearly 1.2 million people were affected, 3,500 homes were destroyed and another 121,718 houses were damaged, government figures say.
Valencia expressed his gratitude for the UN’s help. “At this moment that’s so dramatic for many communities in the country, we appreciate the interest shown by the international community,” he said.
The UN will monitor the development of the humanitarian aid for the victims.
